In EDTE 255 I observed elementary classrooms and began to apply theory to practice. I reflected on my teaching identity and the kind of educator I want to be. Learning about classroom management, lesson planning and differentiated instruction made me feel more confident about entering the field. I also learned the importance of reflective teaching and continual growth.
CHLD 302 deepened my understanding of how parenting styles, family systems and cultural backgrounds influence a child’s development. I explored how authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved parenting each shape children’s emotional regulation, self‑concept and behaviour. Through readings, discussions and case studies I learned how to view parenting through both psychological and sociocultural lenses.
Key takeaways: Building a strong home connection as an educator is essential. I recognise that families are a child’s first teachers and that respecting diverse parenting values creates inclusive, supportive classroom environments. This course also helped me reflect on my own assumptions about parenting and taught me to approach families with empathy, not judgement.
